With the 2011-2012 season in the books, it time to look to next year. The WVU Women’s basketball team exceeded expectations, after losing 5 seniors the year before, by finishing 5th in the Big East and making the NCAA Tournament. The team had lots of young talent, so getting one more year experience will be huge for most of the Mountaineers. Now these veteran players are looking forward to the move to the Big 12 and are excited for next season. One reason that they are looking to next season, is the freshman class coming in next season.
WVU has one of the best recruiting classes they have ever had this year. They are bringing in girls at every position that could come in and help immediately. West Virginia is known as a defensive minded team. The Ladies only let up 52 points per game this season, and with this recruiting class, this number could very easily be lower next season.
The main problem the women faced this year was the lack of a senior leader. Natalie Burtonwas the only senior and she never really emerged as a team leader because she had seen a lessened roll every season since she came in as a freshman. Because of this, these girls were somewhat lost it seemed. They didn’t only lose 5 seniors the season before, but of these seniors, 4 were starters and the other one was always one of the first off the bench. Hopefully, now that there is a solid group of experienced upperclassmen, someone can step up as the team leader and help develop these freshmen and give them a good example. Make sure to check back in later this week to check out a more in depth preview of this recruiting class.
